For Andrei’s Bachelor party, he had one request. He wanted to go to the National WW2 Museum with ME! At first, I thought we were going to Washington D.C., but soon found out it was in the town of New Orleans. This trip was a fun one because neither of us had made the trip out there before. On our prior trips, at least one of us had been, but not this city. The only picture I had of New Orleans was from Princess and the Frog and I haven’t even seen the movie. Needless to say, here are some things we learned about New Orleans:
- Food: We fell in love with the Southern cooking! We ate a lot of crawfish and shrimp. Our most memorable meals were the crawfish Etouffee, alligator corn, gumbo, and beignets. Our favorite restaurant was a hole-in-the-wall called Bon’s Street Food and the Marriott breakfast buffet!
- Architecture: We visited the Garden District that consisted of historic colonial style mansions. One of the places reminded me of Noah built Allie with a wrap around porch in the movie, The Notebook. We stayed in the French Quarter. It was beautiful, historic, with a dash of stinky side streets aka Bourbon Street.
- Museums: We went to the Civil War Museum and the National WW2 Museum. It was an enlightening experience. Andrei is a wonderful tour guide. For each exhibit Andrei would tell an engaging story about why this battle or operation was important. Although I did not enjoy Andrei’s pop quizzes at every corner, it helped me understand the logical sequence of events from Operation Overlord (D-Day) to the Battle of the Bulge to the Pacific Front. I left with a deep sense of appreciation of what our freedom costs in America. Since our trip, I have watched Band of Brothers. I think it earned me some brownie points with Andrei!
- Casino: Caesars recently acquired the Harrah’s casino and completely renovated the interior. It felt a bit out of place, but it did allow us to watch the Denver Nuggets in the playoffs. We like to play a game called Craps. The goal is to roll the same number twice before rolling a 7. While I watched the Nuggets, Andrei had fun calculating his odds and winning us money.
Overall, we enjoyed our time in New Orleans. It was the perfect trip for the two of us for a long weekend. Yep, Stitch made an appearance and managed to avoid breaking any of the chandeliers.
